HISTORIC GUITARS

It was the alluring sound of the traditionally made guitar that first enthralled me and ultimately directed me to devote my life to making guitars. I listened to Bream, Williams and Segovia, among others. My fascination with that sound led me to want to know about how we had arrived at the guitars we make today.

MY WORKINGS

The starting point for me was to study the past masters. From Louis Panormo to Torres, to Santos Hernandes, Francisco Simplicio, and Hermann Hauser, I have studied the development of the guitar over the past two hundred years. The learning that I have acquired from these studies has shown that each style of guitar has it’s own character and charm.

Its important to me that in the strictest sense I don't produce a 'copy' of a maker’s guitar. What I aim to do is get inside the mind of that maker, see from behind his eye and listen to the sound with his ears. I seek to reproduce the soul of that instrument from that particular time in history. And so make instruments that are ’inspired by’ or 'in the style of’ the greats.

THE GUITARS

To date I have made guitars in the style of Louis Panormo, (having restored a fine example of his work); Antonio de Torres, Santos Hernandez (having had the honour of restoring a fine guitar from 1929) as well as having made several guitars based on the Ramirez 1912 guitar which Santos made.

I have also made many guitars in the style of Hermann Hauser.Having gained this experience has meant that I am able to bring a wealth of knowledge and breadth of understanding to my own instrument making.
